A Guide for New Breeders
"I want to win, not lose," said many new breeders. It’s a common mindset—and a valid one. After all, we all want to see success in the show ring. But the truth is, while certain animals may guarantee a win today, they don’t necessarily guarantee sustained success or long-term improvement in your herd, thus new genetic practices must come into play.
Breeding alpacas is both an art and a science. Successful breeders approach their programs strategically, carefully studying pedigrees, performance records, and traits to determine whether an animal will genuinely advance their herd’s genetic potential.
It’s not just about chasing ribbons (which admitianly, they help confirm what you think of an animal), it’s about building a herd that stands the test of time. Breeders must think long-term, not only for their own programs but for the future of the alpaca industry as a whole.
